Kona Energy: Policy & Markets Internship

About Kona Energy:

Kona Energy is on a mission to deliver the Zero Carbon Future. We are one of the UK’s leading energy storage development companies, developing a portfolio of large scale battery storage projects in both the UK and the US. The company has a strong track record in developing and delivering market leading energy storage infrastructure, having successfully developed and funded one of Europe’s largest transmission connected batteries to date.

The opportunity:

The UK energy system is undergoing fundamental change. Renewable energy sources are rapidly displacing aging fossil fueled power stations and the way we produce, consume and store energy is changing. These changes are underpinned by market forces and a need to urgently decarbonise the world economy, in a fast changing policy landscape.

Kona Energy is looking for a policy & markets intern to grapple with the fast-changing policy landscape in the UK energy sector. A successful applicant will be able to evaluate and summarise energy policy documents; ranging from broad and overarching Government policies, through to wholesale electricity market reform proposals (such as REMA) and micro changes happening at a electricity network level. The role will have a direct impact on Kona Energy’s development process and help to influence the strategic direction of the company.

The successful candidate will be provided with a unique opportunity to learn about one of the UK’s most important and exciting industries, whilst exposing themselves to the inner world of policy and new market implementation. The candidate will report directly to senior management, as well as liaising with advisors, lobbying groups and electricity network companies.

Day to day tasks:

The candidate will undertake the following activities:

·      Reading, interpreting and summarising energy policy and market documents. These will include National level policy documentation introduced by BEIS and DESNZ, as well as micro level policy proposals, such as grid connections reform

·      Writing thought pieces on the UK’s energy sector & coordinating releases with Kona’s communications team

·      Working closely with Kona’s consultants and industry groups to respond to and advise upon policy consultations

Essential skills:

·      A basic understanding of UK energy markets & how policy is delivered in the UK

Essential competencies:

·      A willingness to learn & engage in a fast-moving industry
